Scholarly Journals Support

Limited funds are available to subsidize scholarly research journals of national or international stature. Funds are for full-time faculty members or senior research staff who have been invited to serve as the editor of established, major scholarly journals. Requests must be for editorships that periodically rotate to other institutions. The journals must be considered a major publication in its particular research area. Funds are not available for new journal start-up or for publications that stay within a department.

Please note that funds will be awarded for a specific period of time and may be used to support secretarial or editorial assistant salaries and benefits, postage, software, and other supplies. Funds cannot be used for faculty salaries, hardware, publishing and presentation costs of conference proceedings, or editors' travel expenses to conferences. Typical awards range between $1,500 and $5,000 per year for up to three years.

Interested investigators should submit requests that include:

  • A description of the journal, readership (circulation), number of issues published per year.
  • Approximate number of manuscripts received for review annually.
  • Evidence of journal's national and international stature, and association, if any, with a professional organization or press.

The proposal should also provide a detailed budget, a time period for support not to exceed three years, a description of the benefits to UK, and a copy of the journal's editorial board page/title page or a internet link for this information.

In most cases matching funding from an established organization and/or internal funding from a department or college dean is required. The Office of the Vice President will evaluate each request  on a case-by-case basis.
