If, when you click on the link, a page with 'garbage' characters comes back, you don't have a helper application set up correctly for reading a Word or WordPerfect document. To remedy this situation, do the following:

PC Instructions

  1. Click on the Options/General Preferences menu.
  2. Click on the Helpers tab (top of screen)
  3. Click on Create New Type button
  4. FOR WORD: Mime Type = Application, Mime Sub Type = Word Doc (click on OK); File Extensions = doc; Click on the 'Save to Disk' radio button.
  5. FOR WORD PERFECT: Mime Type = Application, Mime Sub Type = Word Perfect Doc (click on OK); File Extensions = wpd; Click on the 'Save to Disk' radio button.

Macintosh Instructions

  1. Click on the Options/General Preferences menu.
  2. Click on the Helpers tab (top of screen)
  3. Click on New button
  4. FOR WORD:Description = Word Doc, Mime Type = Application; File Extensions = doc; Click on the 'Save to Disk' radio button.
  5. FOR WORD PERFECT: Description = Word Perfect Doc, Mime Type = Application; File Extensions = wpd; Click on the 'Save to Disk' radio button.

It appears that the Internet Explorer will ask you to save the file if it doesn't recognize the file extension (i.e., wpd or doc). If this is not the case, you can add an application to open the file by following these instructions:

Click on the View/Options Menu and click on the File Types button (in the middle of the screen to the left); Click on the New Type button;

FOR WORD PERFECT - Description of Type = Word Perfect File; Associated Extension = wpd; Content Type = application; Click on New and locate your copy of Word Perfect on your hard drive or network; click OK.

FOR MICROSOFT WORD - Description of Type = Microsoft Word File: Associate Extension = doc; Content Type = application; Click on New and locate your copy of Word on your hard drive or network; click OK.
