From the President
From the installation of the university's first supercomputer in 1987 to the recent acquisition of two state-of-the-art, high-performance supercomputing systems, the University of Kentucky has consistently and aggressively equipped itself to support the creativity and innovational intellect of each member of the university's faculty, staff and student research community.
The university's Center for Computational Sciences provides a literal launching platform from which researchers may work to solve complex problems to further knowledge and improve our lives. And because today's communication technology is dynamic, the university's long-term strategy was—and will continue to be—developed to view our investment in cutting-edge research technology as a necessary recurring cost of leadership. We believe this is a just—and realistic—philosophy. If we expect exemplary research from our faculty, staff and students, we must afford them the highest quality of tools with which to accomplish it.
In the end, we all benefit. The new knowledge created by research ultimately ripples into new products, new jobs, new services, and new revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.
