James Still Fellowship for Graduate Study in the Humanities and Social

A fellowship is available for graduate study in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Kentucky for an entering student who is a graduate of an independent (privately supported) college in the Appalachian areas of Kentucky , North Carolina , Ohio , Tennessee , West Virginia or Virginia , or is a resident of the Appalachian area. The fellowship is in the amount of $15,000, plus a tuition scholarship and student health insurance. The award is potentially renewable for a second year for master's students or for a total of three years for doctoral students. The awards, named to honor author James Still, are endowed by a gift from the Bingham Fund. James Still Fellowships are 12-month awards, as long as the fellow remains enrolled.
CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
- Candidates for James Still Fellowships must be nominated by the program's director of graduate studies. Students applying to either master's or doctoral programs are eligible. Eligible programs include: Anthropology, Classics, Communication, Diplomacy, Economics, Education, English, Family Studies, Fine Arts, the foreign languages, Geography, Historic Preservation, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.
- Candidates must be graduates of one of the independent (privately supported) colleges in the Appalachian areas of Kentucky , North Carolina , Ohio , Tennessee , West Virginia or Virginia , or be residents of Appalachian area.
- Non-traditional students and those with demonstrated financial need are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates must be applying to or enrolling in their first year of study in the graduate program.
- Candidates must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.2 or above.
- Candidates must have a graduate grade point average of 3.5 or above on any previous graduate work.
NOMINATION PROCESS
In the following order, the nomination must include:
- A completed fellowship nomination form specific to the James Still Fellowship;
- A letter of nomination from the program's director of graduate studies;
- Photocopies of transcripts from all schools attended, both undergraduate and graduate;
- A photocopy of the GRE (GMAT) scores;
- Letters of recommendation from two academic references;
- Name and address of school from which high school diploma received;
- One page biographical essay including Appalachian background and career aspirations.
DUE DATE FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations with all appropriate documentation (six complete sets) must reach the Graduate School Funding Office, 203 Gillis Building, no later than Thursday, February 19, 2009.
