Multi-Year Fellowships

Pursuant to the President’s response to the Committee on Graduate Education at the University of Kentucky, starting with the 1998-99 academic year the Graduate School began offering Multi-Year Fellowships that carry a stipend of $18,000, a tuition scholarship, and student health insurance. Intended to enhance the competitive ability of UK programs, Multi-Year Fellowships are designed to attract outstanding first-year graduate students being newly recruited to the University of Kentucky. Multi-Year Fellowships are 12-month awards.

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY

NOMINATION PROCESS

Candidates for Multi-Year Fellowships must be nominated by the program's director of graduate studies. Programs may submit two nominations for the Multi-Year Fellowships.

In the following order, nomination packets must include six complete sets of:
  1. A completed fellowship nomination form specific to the Multi-Year Fellowship;
  2. A letter of nomination from the director of graduate studies elaborating on special qualifications of the candidate (previous scholarships, honors and awards, research papers, publications, etc.);
  3. Three letters of recommendation from current or former professors;
  4. Photocopies of transcripts from all schools attended, both undergraduate and graduate;
  5. Photocopy of official GRE or GMAT scores.

SELECTION PROCESS

Ranking of the candidates and alternates for these fellowships will be determined on the basis of the criteria set forth above. Faculty representatives from the standing fellowship panels will advise the dean on recommended recipients and alternates.

DUE DATE FOR NOMINATIONS

Nominations with all appropriate documents (six complete sets) must reach the Graduate School Funding Office, 203 Gillis Building, no later than Monday, February 16, 2009. 

NOTES:

With permission of the Graduate School, doctoral students receiving Multi-Year Fellowships are eligible to reserve semesters of this fellowship as long as they use all three years of eligibility with five years from the date of admission..

Students who currently hold Multi-Year Fellowships should not be re-nominated. The Fellowship Office will inform directors of graduate studies of the procedure for renewal of current Multi-Year Fellowships at a later date.

Multi-Year Fellowships are awarded for a total of two years for master's students and three years for doctoral students. Students initially enrolling at the master's level and subsequently continuing for the doctorate are eligible for a maximum of three years of support. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.
