Doctor of Education. The University of Kentucky first offered a full doctoral degree program completely off-site in 1988 at its Graduate Center at Northern Kentucky University by the Department of Administration and Supervision (EDA) in the College of Education. This program was specifically designed to provide an emphasis in Educational Leadership, primarily for those involved with or interested in primary- and secondary- school education. This effort has grown to the point where cohort groups of students are also pursuing the Ed.D. at the Community Colleges in Ashland and Prestonsburg in Eastern Kentucky and in Owensboro and Paducah in Western Kentucky.
In 1991, the Department of Educational Policy Studies & Evaluation first began offering the Ed.D. degree with a specialization in Higher Education at the Distance Learning graduate sites in Owensboro and Paducah.
More than 100 students have been admitted to these two off-campus doctoral programs, allowing them to pursue their educational objectives while still employed full-time.
Periodically, when resources permit, the two departments initiate new cohorts or groups of students to pursue their degrees in selected areas in the state. The mutual support and interaction the students in these groups provide each other, in addition to the student-faculty interactions, significantly improve successful completion of educational goals.
Master of Engineering. The College of Engineering offers a Master of Engineering degree program which has five areas of concentration: environmental engineering, manufacturing systems design, advanced processing systems, electronics and process control, and mining engineering. The program is intended to serve the educational needs of engineers from accredited baccalaureate programs who are employed by Kentucky industries, consulting firms, and government agencies. Courses are offered primarily by ITV at the Community Colleges in Ashland, Elizabethtown, Owensboro, Paducah, and Prestonsburg. More sites may be added in the future.
Master of Science in Library Science. The School of Library and Information Science has offered the M.S.L.S. degree program at its Graduate Center at Northern Kentucky University for many years. Up to 80% of the full degree program can be taken on-site. Increasing effort is being made to expand course offerings elsewhere in the state, especially in the Louisville area.
Master of Mining Engineering. The Department of Mining Engineering offers a professionally oriented degree intended for the student who wishes to add topics to a basic baccalaureate degree for use in a working career. By special arrangement, the full degree program is available entirely by satellite transmission to locations all across the country.
Master of Science in Nursing. The College of Nursing offers the M.S.N. through the Medical Center's outreach program at the University of Kentucky Rural Health Center in Hazard. With sufficient demand, graduate nursing courses are periodically offered at Morehead State University and Western Kentucky University.
Master of Rehabilitation Counseling. The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling offers the Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree on a statewide basis via satellite, compressed video, and internet technologies. The degree requires 45 hours of course work, 3 hours of practicum, and 9 hours of internship. Field work is performed at rehabilitation agencies throughout the Commonwealth. Courses are offered so that the program can be completed in three years. A cooperative agreement with Kentucky State University for an Endorsement Curriculum allows their students to take program-basis courses that can be used to reduce the number of credits such students are required to take at UK for their degree program.
Master of Social Work. The College of Social Work offers a fully accredited M.S.W. degree at several locations across the state. The degree requires 60 credit hours, at least 30 of which must be taken at UK. Advanced standing of up to 30 credit hours may be granted for work completed at a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The College has recently initiated a new distance learning site at Prestonsburg Community College. This is in addition to its offerings at Northern Kentucky University and Morehead State University.
Master of Science in Special Education. The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling offers a master's degree in the areas of Moderate/Severe Disabilities and Early Childhood Special Education at selected community college sites throughout Kentucky using satellite and compressed video delivery coupled with on-site supervision of practica. While the master's degree can be completed in 36 hours, additional hours may be required for those who are seeking certification. Planned programs for advancement in teaching rank are also available. The Department also offers course work toward a Specialist degree in the areas of Assistive Technology, Moderate/Severe Disabilities, and Early Childhood Special Education at selected community college sites throughout Kentucky. Specialist's programs (30 hours above a master's degree) may be used for advancement in teaching rank.
