Writing Data Management Plans: New Online Resource
A number of external funding agencies require researchers to include detailed plans in their grant applications to manage research data, called Data Management Plans. UK cooperates with the University of California’s California Digital Library to provide UK access to DMPTool, an easy-to-use resource which guides users through the process of creating data management plans for specific funding agencies, including the various directorates within the National Science Foundation. DMPTool offers step-by-step instructions laid out in accordance with specific sponsor requirements and/or templates.
UK users can access it using their UK log-in credentials at https://dmp.cdlib.org/. The DMPTool currently supports the following agencies with formal requirements for plans to manage research data: the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.
Please visit the PDO Facilities Description Library on the Proposal Development Office website to view other useful resource narratives available to assist in drafting data and resource sharing plans.

“Export Controls and Other Security Concerns” Teleconference - October 11
The Office of Sponsored Projects Administration is sponsoring a teleconference presented by the National Council of University Research Administrators titled “Export Controls and Other Security Concerns.” The presentation will be shown on Thursday, October 11, in Room 102 Mining and Minerals Building from 8:30 am to noon. Please email Sean Scott to register. You must register if you want to receive the presentation materials.
Presentation Description
This program will cover export controls and national security concerns applicable to research at those universities that may not have a skilled or dedicated export control officer or export control compliance office. The session will address export control issues and their applicability in the everyday life of the pre-award research administrator (proposal review, award negotiations), department administrator (field research trips, foreign travel, shipments), and faculty members (conferences, meetings, sharing of data/etc). The session will also include a discussion of other national security issues (e.g., security plans, access to classified information) that may arise in contract negotiations. How to “start from the very basics” in building an internal export control management plan, training, etc. will be included. The Obama Administration’s new export control reform initiatives and their affect on universities will be discussed. This session will not review the licensing process, as its focus will be to provide an overview of how export control and national security regulations apply to academic institutions.
New Program: UK Information Technology Support Grants - October 15
This internal grant program is designed to enhance UK's research enterprise by assisting investigators in accelerating their research programs related to learning and information technology. With the availability of high-speed analytics, real-time computation can be performed while learners interact with learning systems over the internet. In the past decade, the educational technology sector has produced several examples of adaptive learning environments that match learning concepts to the learner’s skill levels and needs. This program is to encourage the application of cognitive and non-cognitive models for individualized learning using current adaptive learning methods or tools. Prior research on adaptive learning has shown that individual differences in learner cognitive abilities (e.g., working memory, reasoning, visualization and verbal skills) and non-cognitive factors (e.g., confidence, motivation, effort, self-efficacy, need for sensation, cognitive reflection) can both influence learning. A program goal is to support faculty developing methods for measurably and sustainably improving instructional delivery and learning outcomes for UK undergraduate courses in all content areas.
The program will support the following:
- Development of a working prototype of an adaptive learning object (software and systems which facilitate learning via personalized instruction)
- Research that explores how cognitive and/or non-cognitive factors affect learning with instructional technologies or adaptive learning components
- Customization of an existing online learning tool or platform to further enhance personalized instruction
Awards will generally be from $5,000 to $20,000 per year, and costs should be commensurate with the proposed work. Awards will be for one to three years only from the date of award. No more than one application per faculty member will be funded in a three-year period. A goal for this program is to assist new investigators in developing an independent research program. Investigators who have significant amounts of research funding or start-up funds may be less competitive for these grants. UK IT can provide the high-speed, real-time analytic platform, existing data resources and data design and data collection and data integration services.
Deadlines:
- October 15, 2012 (for funding to begin December 1, 2012)
- January 31, 2013 (for funding to begin March 29, 2013)

Research Participant Self-Referral Database
The Center for Clinical and Translations Science (CCTS) is pleased to announce its Research Participant Self-Referral Database. The website is located on the CCTS homepage; you can also view it by clicking here.
The Research Participant Self-Referral Database is for individuals interested in participating in clinical research studies. This is a secure tool that matches self-referred potential participants to eligible researchers and their studies at UK. The database utilizes safeguards to limit access to participant’s information. Contact information is kept confidential and used solely to inform participants about clinical research studies conducted at the University of Kentucky.
Upon request CCTS will provide investigators with the names of self-referred participants who have requested to be referred to their research studies. Please see the "What is the Clinical Research Self-referral Database?" and "Privacy Agreement" for more information. CCTS has a general agreement form that will need to be signed by the investigator of an IRB-approved study in order to proceed. Contact CCTS Research Participant/Marketing unit about this general agreement by emailing Roxanne Poskin.
