Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Online Training Resources
Scholars and university faculty involved in developing plans for instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) have numerous resources at their disposal. Over the years the scientific community has developed innovative course materials and training resources. The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) has assembled a listing of RCR resources including web-based training, programs developed at external universities, videos, publications, and forums, as well as local campus resources. Faculty and students are encouraged to visit the ORI RCR Resource website at www.research.uky.edu/ori/RCR.htm.
Two of the most recent additions to the ORI RCR website provide libraries of novel RCR training materials:
- Ethics Core Digital Library: National Center for Professional & Research Ethics – provides tools, multimedia educational materials, access to research literature, mentoring materials, role-play exercises, and more.
http://nationalethicscenter.net - Ethics Education Library: Ethics Education Resources in Engineering & the Sciences – includes case studies, best practice examples, ethics course syllabi, pedagogical materials, and course assessment methods.

NIH Diversity Supplements Spell O-P-P-O-R-T-U-N-I-T-Y
Did you know that the NIH and the CDC’s National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) offer supplemental funding for investigators holding many types of NIH or NIOSH grants? Titled "Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research," this program awards administrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce by supporting eligible students, postdocs, and investigators. Those eligible for support are from groups that have been underrepresented in the sciences, including certain racial and ethnic groups, people with disabilities, and people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Funded investigators, for their part, can obtain additional funds to recruit new members to their research teams. To view vignettes of NIH-funded research endeavors at UK that have been enriched by diversity supplements, click Investigator Research Resources.
Short applications for funding to support work within the scope of the original project may be submitted to the NIH or NIOSH at any time. For more information, see the funding opportunity announcement http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-08-190.html. For assistance with the application process, contact the UK Proposal Development Office at PDO@uky.edu or 257-2861.
To facilitate a match between funded investigators and talented undergraduates looking for research experience, the UK Office of Undergraduate Research offers a faculty research database that will allow students to identify faculty mentors. If you have an NIH or NIOSH grant and wish to recruit an eligible undergraduate to be supported by an administrative supplement, please register using this form: Faculty Registration Form.
The Office of Undergraduate Research also publicizes this opportunity to interested undergraduate students on its web site at http://www.uky.edu/UGResearch/NIH.html. Contact Bessie Guerrant, Office of Undergraduate Research (bguer00@email.uky.edu or 257-6322) for direct assistance.

"Cost Sharing: Why No Good Deed Goes Unpunished" - March 24
The Office of Sponsored Projects Administration is sponsoring a teleconference presented by the National Council of University Research Administrators entitled "Cost Sharing: Why No Good Deed Goes Unpunished." The presentation will be shown on Thursday March 24, 2011 in room 102 Mining and Minerals Building from 8:30 am to noon.
Cost sharing is an issue that affects all institutions, and its implications are often the cause of confusion. The program will include a review of the types of costs that qualify for cost sharing, the accepted categories of cost sharing, and the requirements for documenting and reporting it. The panel will discuss the various pressure points with cost sharing, from proposal to award to project closeout.
In addition, the relationships among cost sharing, effort reporting, and indirect cost rates create the need for sophisticated systems to manage the complexities, and the panel will discuss the key points of intersection. Finally, the panel will seek to clarify important risk areas arising from a heightened emphasis on cost sharing in recent audits.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will acquire an understanding of the applicable federal policies, the OMB Clarification Memo of January, 2001, and expectations for reporting and documentation.
- Participants will learn scope of cost sharing responsibilities on a university campus.
- Participants will learn how cost sharing affects F&A rates and effort reporting responsibilities.
- Participants will learn about recent Federal audits and new developments relating to cost sharing.
Please email Sean Scott at sescot0@email.uky.edu if you would like to register. You must register if you want to receive the presentation materials.
Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day - May 17
We are pleased to announce the opening of registration for the inaugural Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, 2011, in the new Pavilion A of the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital located at 1000 South Limestone Street.
Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day is being initiated to highlight current findings and ongoing research within the region targeting development, prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes. A major feature of the day will be presentations by internationally recognized experts in the field. To facilitate communication of research, a poster session will be held during the event. Scientific poster presentations by graduate students and post-doctoral fellows can be entered into a judged competition for awards. In addition, podium presentations from selected abstracts will highlight local cutting-edge research.
April 8, 2011 is the deadline for submitting an abstract for the poster presentations and for consideration to be one of the podium presenters during the symposium who are chosen from abstract submissions.
Registration will remain open until May 1, 2011 for those who wish to attend the event but who are not submitting an abstract for the poster and podium presentations.
