NIH Loan Repayment Program
The NIH Loan Repayment Programs application cycle opened Sept. 1. These programs repay up to $35,000 of educational debt annually and are open to biomedical and behavioral researchers who are committed to conducting two years of qualified biomedical or behavioral research at a nonprofit, university or government institution. On average, 40 percent of all new LRP applications are funded, and the awards are renewable.
The five LRPs are clinical research, pediatric research, health disparities research, contraception and infertility research, and clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. To qualify, research must fit within one of these program areas, and individuals must:
- possess a doctoral-level degree (with the exception of the contraception and infertility research LRP);
- devote at least 20 hours per week to research funded by a domestic nonprofit, university or government entity;
- have educational loan debt equal to or exceeding 20 percent of their annual institutional base salary; and
- be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
The application cycle will close Nov. 15, 2010 at 8 p.m. EST. More details and the application can be found at www.lrp.nih.gov. For additional assistance, potential applicants may call or e-mail the LRP Information Center at (866) 849-4047 or lrp@nih.gov. New Grant Writing Resource – UK Facilities Description Library
The Proposal Development Office (PDO) is pleased to announce a new resource, the UK Facilities Description Library, accessible from PDO’s website: www.research.uky.edu/pdo. This free resource, available to all members of the UK community with a valid UK ID, provides written descriptions of University facilities and resources that are most commonly required in grant applications. Descriptions are updated regularly to ensure that researchers have accurate and current information about University resources, and new descriptions are being developed on a regular basis. Please contact PDO for additional information or for additional resources not yet available in the library.

NSF Research Experiences for Teachers
***UK College of Engineering faculty interested in this program should contact Eric Grulke, Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering, for internal deadlines and application procedures.***
The Directorate for Engineering (ENG), Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering program supports the active involvement of K-12 teachers and community college faculty in engineering research in order to bring knowledge of engineering and technological innovation into their classrooms. The goal is to help build long-term collaborative partnerships between K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers, community college faculty, and the NSF university research community by involving the teachers in engineering research and helping them translate their research experiences and new knowledge of engineering into classroom activities. Partnerships with inner city schools or other high need schools are especially encouraged, as is participation by underrepresented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.
This announcement features two mechanisms for support of in-service and pre-service K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty: RET supplements to ongoing ENG awards and new RET Site awards. RET supplements may be included in proposals for new or renewed NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) grants or as supplements to ongoing NSF ENG funded projects. RET Sites are based on independent proposals from engineering departments, schools or colleges to initiate and conduct research participation projects for a number of K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty.
The principal investigator of an ENG RET Site proposal must have a faculty appointment within a College/Department of Engineering or a College/Department of Engineering Technology within the submitting U.S. academic institution. Two RET Site proposals may be submitted by a U.S. academic institution, College/Department of Engineering or College/Department of Engineering Technology as the lead institution. One proposal per PI. Closing date for NSF is Nov 16, 2010.
