Upon completion of the presentations, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles behind what legally constitutes a hazardous waste according to federal and state environmental protection regulations.
  • Gain an understanding of how some pharmaceutical wastes generated by UK HealthCare units may qualify as hazardous wastes and, therefore, require that specific management steps be taken to ensure safe and compliant handling.
  • Recognize the differences between “regulated” hazardous waste and “equivalent” hazardous waste pharmaceuticals and the importance of managing the latter with special consideration.
  • Discuss the environmental and legal ramifications of improperly disposing certain waste pharmaceuticals into the sanitary sewer system.
  • Describe the purpose of gene transfer methods of treatment and what diseases or disorders are candidates for this treatment.
  • Describe the components of gene transfer.
  • Gain an understanding of the different types of vectors used and their advantages and disadvantages.
  • Understand the Federal regulatory drivers for the local oversight of such clinical trials.
