Grants.gov Transition to Adobe Forms
Grants.gov will be transitioning its application packages from the current PureEdge format to an Adobe format. The current timeline for the transition mandates that all new funding opportunities posted April 1, 2008 and later must use Adobe forms. As of June 30, 2008 only Adobe packages will be able to be submitted through Grants.gov. While the timeline may be subject to change, all departments should expect to see these Adobe packages soon. In general, the changes to the packages will make them much easier to complete and submit. However, the Adobe packages can ONLY be used with Adobe Reader versions 8.1.1 or 8.1.2.
Grants.gov states that the packages must be downloaded, opened, completed and submitted using only those versions of Adobe Reader. Using a different program during any stage of that process may cause errors when submitting the package through Grants.gov. So an investigator may be able to download and fill out the packages using a different program without an indication of a problem, but when the package is submitted to Grants.gov, it may generate errors and prevent the package from being processed.
Depending on the version of Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional software you have installed on your computer you may be able to open, complete and submit an Adobe Reader application package to Grants.gov.
Adobe Acrobat software allows you to perform all tasks performed by the corresponding version of Adobe Reader software. The version number of Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Professional) software and Adobe Reader software that perform the same tasks have matching version numbers (i.e. Adobe Reader 8.1.2, parallels Acrobat Standard or Professional 8.1.2 viewing function). To complete a Grants.gov application package you must either install the Grants.gov compatible version of Adobe Reader for free or have an equivalent version of Acrobat Standard or Professional software already installed on your computer.
To check which version of Acrobat you are using go to the Help menu in Acrobat then select About Acrobat (version #), a text box will appear containing an Adobe logo with a number, under that information you will see another number, this is the version number of your software (i.e. 8.1.2).
To verify if you have a compatible version of Adobe Reader installed, you can go to http://www.grants.gov/applicants/AdobeVersioningTestOnly.jsp. The compatible version of Adobe Reader is available to download for free on the Grants.gov website at http://www.grants.gov/help/download_software.jsp.
If you have questions about an Adobe package, please contact your Research Administrator.
OSPA Outreach
The Office of Sponsored Projects Administration is offering a new outreach service to the UK community. It can be a challenge to stay current with research administration with all the constantly-changing information that is required. Attendance at campus wide presentations may not fit into your schedule or cover a needed topic. Colleges and departments may now request training or information on specific topics and have an OSPA staff member come to that area and provide the requested material. Please visit the OSPA website at http://www.research.uky.edu/ospa to submit a request.
