Mini-grants Available to Increase Girls' Interest in Science
The Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative, a statewide initiative to encourage girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), is currently offering mini-grants of up to $1,000.
Teachers, community groups and other organizations committed to collaborating, informing and motivating girls are encouraged to apply.
Projects for consideration may vary from a one-day event with a single classroom or Girl Scout troop partnering with a professional organization, corporation or college exploring STEM careers to an extended project of monthly meetings or a summer camp.
Applications for mini-grants are being accepted from July 1 through July 31 and are available at: http://www.ngcproject.org/mini-grant/index.cfm.

Objectives:
- To have a greater appreciation of the differences between neonatal and adult immune function.
- To understand the epidemiology of pulmonary infections in infants.
- To understand the underlying immune mechanisms responsible for increased susceptibility of infants to pulmonary pathogens.
- To consider immunotherapies for stimulating host defense in neonatal lungs.

Purpose: Focus on special challenges in clinical research
Objectives: Participants will be able to:
- describe the ethical dilemmas and regulatory challenges of developing new drug products in a global economy;
- identify the components of a comprehensive quality assurance program;
gain strategies for enhancing subject recruitment and retention; - apply good clinical practice guidelines in complex clinical trial environments;
- appreciate perspectives of various clinical trial cast members on hot-topic issues;
- understand and utilize Medicare Coverage Guidelines in conducting fiscally compliant clinical research;
- gain knowledge and inspiration for efforts to increase awareness and provide culturally sensitive care to the African-American community.
