BREEDING COLONY BAR CO= DE SOP FOR RATS

The Cage Card is the = per diem bill; rats are billed per animal. Each Rat must have a cage card. Th= ere can be multiple cage cards on one cage.&nb= sp; Activation of the cage card both debits the protocol for animal use = and begins the per diem charge for the cage. ALL cages must have a bar coded ca= ge card. Temporary cage cards ha= ve no bar code and therefore cannot be activated. However, a temporary card is bette= r than no card.

Cage cards must be re= turned to HSRB 204 for deactivation or per diem will continue to accrue. It is recommended that the date for deactivation be written on cage cards to help assure deactivation on the correct day. Cards are collected before 3:30pm on week days and cards left after that time are charged to the next day.

You have pre-printed = cage cards for breeding colonies along with a log sheet with the same numbers as those on the cage cards. These sheets are the responsibility of the person who is doing the weaning but th= ey must remain in the animal room, or other designated location, at all times. These log sheets and c= ards are not to go to the PI lab or office. They are the Property of DLAR. Copies of the log sheet may be mad= e and in some cases encouraged, i.e., if you record originating cage, sex and oth= er information. This is informat= ion that DLAR does not need but if you want this for your records, by all means= add it in the blank space on the log sheet—do not write this in the space provided for the “Activation Date” or for the “ # of Animals Weaned”.

To use a breeding col= ony cage card, select the card and go to the corresponding line on the weaning sheet= for that card number. Write the d= ate and the number of animals being placed in that cage—for rats, that nu= mber is always one (1). For transf= ers, write “T”. All an= imals are to be weaned at 21 days of age unless otherwise specified in your proto= col. Any animal weaned must be reported= for use on a valid protocol.

Never re-use a cage c= ard for weaned animals. When an animals is used, turn in that cage card for deactivation. Placing it on another cage/animal prevents proper debit for animal use on the protocol. If it is not turned in per diem continues to accrue.

Use weaning cards in numerical order. The weaning = sheet is scanned and these numbers show up in numerical order.

The breeding colony l= og sheets are copied by DLAR Personnel and the copies turned in to the DLAR of= fice at least one time each week for timely activation. A line is drawn on the original log sheet and the date is written on the line so that you know what has been tu= rned in each week.

Skipped cards on bree= ding log: When a breeding card sho= ws up on the inventory scan but it has not been activated because the log sheet h= as not been filled in, it is activated for one rat on the date of the scan or = the date of the card previous to the one missing information; if information is filled in for other cards on the page.

Should you need a rep= lacement for an existing card, just request a reprint of the original card. This would be the option when a ca= rd has been torn, gotten wet, etc.
